21st Century Crow !!!

Hello people!!! Hope you guys had an awesome weekend to keep you going though the coming week. Your comments to my previous post have been immense boost to my morale and spirits. Thnx a ton!!! Also, am sincerely following one of my favourite quotes that I often mention – “At times of distress, behave like a duck - keep calm and unruffled on the surface, but keep paddling away like crazy underneath.” So I am keeping myself crazily-motivated from within and trying to keep my cool on the outside. One of my best friends used to say that distance makes the heart grow fonder. How true!!!

Now, let me take you from my virtual world to the real one. Hopefully, this should cheer up my blog from its forlorn state and bring back the ecstasies. This happened a few months back (as soon as I had come home for vacation). As usual, in spite of the sun shining brightly into my face through the window panes (so architecturally set up by dad!!!), I tried to cover up myself with the blanket and extend my trance. As I was battling my way to catch up with the additional 10-minute sleep I had bargained, I heard mumblings from the kitchen. As far as I could make it, I thought my mom was deeply intrigued in some soliloquy.

Slowly it turned into a tempest. I woke up grumbling at the morning disturbances and was startled at what I saw. My mom was taking out salt biscuits from the refrigerator and feeding it to the crow that was so perfectly perched by our kitchen window!!! Usually, we feed the crow with rice before we eat, a custom followed in many Indian homes. But this really got me stunned. She was talking (No, shouting!!!) to the crow saying that it was demanding a lot of biscuits nowadays!!! Ahan! So, that’s what all the cawing was about!!!

Later, I quickly brushed my teeth and returned to find out the whole story behind this 21st Century Crow. It seems, the crow was a regular visitor to mom’s kitchen. Its nest (home!!!) is just next doors - on the branch that extends to our kitchen window. Sincerely, at 9.00 am, it seems it will be cawing on top of its voice, calling out to my mom to give morning breakfast!!! No wonder, in a house where no one eats salt biscuits, there is always a mention of salt biscuits on the grocer’s list.

Its really sweet of my mom to be doing such a thing. The crow makes a lively neighbour for her. Of late, this crow comes in the afternoons as well, to feed the next generation of small crows in the nest!!! It’s a wonderful sight to watch it feed its little ones. Looks like my mom has got to add an extra pack of salt biscuits in her grocery list!!! Will these “scavengers” one day be licking my butter scotch ice cream, or demand for pizzas and burgers from a menu card???

I think that is cute that your mom feeds the crow.My brother buys wild bird seeds and feeds all the birds that descend in his backyard.Every day there seems to be more and more. I think they spread the news that there is free food for all.

hehe...one day the crow will be eating from your plate, while you will be waiting ourside for salt biscuits... :-))

Hehe..that brought a smile to my face:-)

I've heard of people feeding cats, dogs, cows and so on..but never a crow:-)

Animals trust you..they are faithful in relationships!!It feels so nice when an animal or bird visits your house day after day for food:-)

Your mom is doing something really nice..:-)

Hey Prithz!
That's very nice of your mom to feed the Crow everyday...Its surely fun to watch a birds nest, I used to watch a bulbul's nest when I was in school.
Oor aalu kozhanthaiya ooti valatha
thaan kozhanthai thaana valarum'nu solvanga...
So probably your mom is following that policy, for your well being :)

@ contented:

Hehe.. Yes!!!

If the crow does anything of that sort, well, whats the point of a scavenger, that's suppposed to be cleaning our environment.

@ starry nights:

Wow, that's really sweet of your brother! Birds are really generous creatures. Crows call out to others when they find food somewhere. Its a very common behaviour.

@ ganesh ranganathan:

Who knows, probabaly, thats my plight when i come back for winter vacation!!!

@ sudarshan:

Glad you enjoyed it!!!

Well, you rightly put it. Animals have so much trust in people. Actually, the custom of feeding crows with our food before we eat, was to test if the food is good for consumption (no poison or stuff like that). That must have been so mean!!! At least, now mom gets the satisfaction of feeding the poor bird.

@ kk:

Hi KK!!!

Kadaisila sonna dioalog nachunu irundhudhu...(*prithz heart breaks*).. lol!!!

I used to watch bulbul's nest too, but that was when i was in another house. There used to be so many birds. I used to reply to the cuckoo's mating call when i was a kid. Lol!!! Poor thing!!!

@ keshi:

Hehe, yeah!!!

Hey! I too used to reply to cuckoo's mating call. I love doing that, though I feel pity for fooling it. I have replied to eagles call too, there used to be a eagle's nest on a coconut tree in my house. It used to sound like my sister's name so to irritate my sister I used to reply to the eagle's call :)

I do remember a crow which lived next to our apartment in chennai...we were bachelors and had lot of left overs every day, we used to feed that crow next morning...it became so friendly to us, on the other hand when ever it has new borns it will become more ferocious and attack if it finds new people in our balcony...

Hey, i am totally lost about this vendaka sambar thing that u and KK discuss very often. If you guys dont mind me asking, what's this about???

@ syam:

Hehe :) Exactly, as u said, crows are really wonderful, in a way that they eat the left overs and serve as scavengers.

Crows get really crazy and ferocious when its breeding time. Now, this crow will perch hard on my head if i peep out of our balcony!!! It flies so low and i peep out of the balcony with an umbrella held in my hand! lol!!!
